Guidelines Introduction

One of the objectives of the network is, "Develop and implement bedside management guidelines, which will be evidence based where evidence exists". This was identified as essential in order to facilitate another of the networks key objectives, "Develop a neonatal network across Staffordshire, Shropshire and Black Country ensuring that mothers and babies are treated in the right place, at the right time and by appropriately skilled staff".

Developing quality guidelines that will be useful at the patient doctor interface, is a very challenging agenda. Consequently, the network has joined with the Bedside Clinical Guidelines Partnership, who had already developed a methodology and a team approach to developing guidelines in adult medicine, surgery and paediatrics, which have been implemented in many of the networks hospitals.

The guidelines pages contain completed clinical guidelines and the titles of those guidelines which are under development. The author of any guideline has access to the Clinical Effectiveness Librarian (David Rogers) who undertakes on their behalf an expert literature review to find answers to specific questions. The outcome of these literature reviews or any other supporting information about the guideline can be found on the evidence pages, which are linked to each guideline. These pages contain a wealth of useful information. However, if you know of additional evidence that has not been considered in answering any of the questions, David Rogers would be delighted to hear from you.

More information about the guidelines project and the authors is available on the guidelines group page. If you would like to comment on a guideline or become involved as a writer or reviewer, then contact the Chairperson of the Clincial Guidelines Group who will be delighted to hear from you.
