PRESS RELEASE
RE: National Audit Office Report 'Caring for Vulnerable Babies'
The Staffordshire, Shropshire & Black Country Newborn Network has welcomed the National Audit Office Report ‘Caring for Vulnerable Babies report published today, December 19.
The report highlights the very difficult issues newborn networks are tackling to improve the quality of care and outcomes for newborn babies needing special or intensive neonatal care and their families. The issues include the serious shortage of funding to staff neonatal appropriately with specialist nurses and doctors as well as the impact of high levels of deprivation on the life chances of those living in the Potteries and the Black Country. Jon Crockett, chair of the Staffordshire, Shropshire & Black Country Newborn Network, said: “We welcome this report on caring for vulnerable babies as it recognises the importance of neonatal care for our services and the progress networks have made to date.” He added that since the Staffordshire, Shropshire & Black Country Newborn Network was set up in 2004, recurrent funding of more than £1 million pounds had been allocated by the network for an additional six neonatologists, two practice nurse educators and 12 neonatal nurses. “In conjunction with the South West Midlands Newborn Network we have also introduced a stand-alone transport service to improve the transfer of small and sick babies within the region and reduce the strain of transfers on the staff within each neonatal unit. “In addition more than £600,000 has been spent non recurrently across the network, improving the quality of care through the introduction of network clinical guidelines, standardising specialist equipment, supporting research and audit and developing a foundation training programme for newly qualified nurses within the network.
“These important developments have been made possible by the close working relationship which has developed between the network and the specialist commissioners. The network will continue to work with commissioners to secure the recommended staffing levels for all our units,” he said.
